Synopsis:

This course provides a practical introduction to global sanctions and their growing impact on finance and business. Participants will learn the key types of sanctions, such as financial restrictions, trade bans, and arms embargoes, why they are imposed, and who must comply, including organisations and professionals operating across borders.

Using real-world case studies on Russia, Iran, and North Korea, the course explores how sanctions evolve, their economic and operational implications, and what they mean for contracts, payments, and funding. Participants will gain valuable insights into managing sanctions risks, strengthening due diligence, and navigating transaction and payment challenges while ensuring regulatory compliance and business continuity.

Matilda Lee

Matilda Lee is a seasoned compliance professional with over 18 years of experience in financial crime compliance, sanctions, and risk management across Asia’s banking sector. Formerly Head of Financial Crime Compliance at ING Bank, she led a team of MLROs in Asia, implemented AML & sanctions compliance frameworks, and advised on complex regulatory matters. Matilda also provides executive training on AML at Nanyang Technological University (NTU)’s Nanyang Business School and volunteers in a finance role for a Singapore-registered charity. Matilda is a Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist, holds an Honours degree in Accountancy from NTU as well as certifications in Sustainable Finance and Digital Transformation. She advocates for ethical & sustainable business practices.
